About Melanin + Moxie
Get to know us…
Have you ever felt small? Like you’re the only one paying attention to what’s really going on in the world? Like you have to pretend to not care about your true passions just to get on with your day in your work or school environments? Do you ever make it to the end of the day exhausted from code-switching, biting your tongue, or burying your true feelings? Do you want a place where you can feel free, appreciated, and supported? If you’ve said yes to any of these questions, then welcome! You’ve officially found your people.
Melanin + Moxie was born in response to society’s efforts to socialize and shrink women, especially women with intersectional identities. It is a space to break free of the silences that dominate moments that make us feel small, to give light to our truths, and to free our true selves even when it means speaking the vulnerable and hard, but necessary truth. Melanin + Moxie is where we can each embrace our inner strength and use our light to rejuvenate one another. In short, it is a place to disrupt the status quo–to be unapologetically one’s entire self and to find peace and community in so doing.
At Melanin + Moxie, we believe in creating safe spaces for marginalized women to come together, put down our masks, lower our shields, share our stories, and embrace our imperfections, we begin to change the world for the better. And we begin to create a society that is more understanding, more welcoming, more loving, more accepting, and more inviting for us all.
Strong women aren’t simply born. We are forged through the challenges of life. With each challenge we grow mentally and emotionally. We move forward with our heads held high and a strength that cannot be denied–women who have been through the storm and survived. -Anonymous
Women often say that it’s hard to make friends once you’re past a certain age. All of the people you meet are either acquaintances, colleagues, or perhaps even potential clients. Layer on top of that all of the –isms out there or anything that makes a person stick out (skin color, gender expression, accents, handicaps) and finding community can seem damn right impossible.
Melanin + Moxie seeks to change that narrative by helping create a supportive community and lifting up the stories of women living their most vibrant lives.
