7 Holiday Gifts to Feel Good About

If you’re anything like me, you’ve spent the past few days stuffing your belly with delicious foods, counting your blessings, and enjoying the company of family (and, maybe even dealing with some of the craziness that comes with family too).

You’ve probably also spent a good deal of time sifting through a bombardment of holiday advertisements, looking for good sales, and figuring out who to get what for the holidays. (Isn’t it crazy how quickly we move from a season to be thankful to a season of giving through purchasing?!)

So whether you’re finishing up the last of your holiday shopping during these last few hours of Cyber Monday or you haven’t even begun to think about gift-giving, I’ve rounded up a list of some of my favorite companies (and they’re all women-owned!) to help you ward off the overwhelm.

Donate to a cause

Okay, so at first glance, this may seem like a strange “gift.” After all, everywhere you look is telling you to buy, buy, buy. I get it. I too spent an hour and a half just trying to declutter my inbox. But really, the whole point of gifting and buying is to do good. To offer someone something that makes their life better, happier, easier or more worthwhile.

As a child, my parents would encourage my sister and I to participate in Adopt-A-Family programs to help provide gifts or holiday meals to those who otherwise would not have them. One year, we helped bring holiday cheer to a little girl in the hospital whose parents were struggling with medical costs. It was the year of the Tickle-Me-Elmo craze, and the toy was number one on that toddler’s list. I’ve never forgotten the joy in her face or the tears in her parents’ eyes when she unwrapped the toy. A single toy and the love that came with it, knowing that others cared, was all that that family needed for Christmas.

So this year, share the true spirit of the holidays with someone by asking them to donate to a cause rather than give you a gift, or by donating to a cause for them. Be it to families in California that lost their homes and livelihoods from the fires, or to organizations helping asylees at the border, find something and give–your time, your energy, or your money. It won’t go unappreciated.

Help a loved one embrace their natural self

With ads bombarding you left and right, telling you what you need and what you lack, it can be easy to feel “less than.” To fill your shopping cart with the newest mascara or hair dryer or outfit trend because the image of you as you are doesn’t match with the image of you as you want to be.

Loving my curls!

As you may have read in my post on learning to do my hair, I’ve only recently started pushing back against Eurocentric beauty norms and am working on embracing my hair and my body just as they are. I recently bit the bullet and tried some products from Deva Curl and it’s amazing how much I’ve begun to love my hair in its natural state! And my hair is breaking less and feels silkier too now that I’ve learned that water and gel are not the answer to a wash-and-go look.

They’re having an awesome Cyber Monday sale where you can get 4 full-sized products for around $65 dollars. If you have super curly hair like mine, I highly recommend the Decadence No-Poo and Conditioner, as well as the Super Stretch Curl Elongator. They smell amazing and have done wonders for my hair. I have NEVER gone this long without straightening my hair. I even considered never straightening it again! Any friends with curly hair or who are transitioning would be really lucky to get this in their stocking.

And while we’re talking about embracing our curls, make sure to take share Grace Eleyae‘s BOGO sale with your favorite natural. I practically live in these caps. They’re lined with satin to keep frizz away and are perfect for traveling or slipping over your twist out and going outside.

Gifts that inspire

I’ve been doing a lot of work on mindset lately and practicing focusing on abundance. I know it may sound a little hokey, but once I started pay attention to the things I say to myself when I’m having a hard time or a hard day, I started to realize that I’d never talk to a friend that way. How can we expect progress when we can’t even give ourselves the grace we deserve?

Enter Abundant Affirmations. I took a business course with Jen, the creator of Abundant Affirmations, and she is not only a wonderful person, but her affirmations are the perfect way to remind you (or a loved one) how brilliant you are. I already owned two of her sets myself, and gave one away as part of the raffle giveaway. And I’ll be giving some as gifts this holiday too. It’s so perfect to walk past my living room table or the desk in my office and read the positive statements, and to practice them out loud. She’s even made ones for moms and kids so you can both remember how great you are. Grab a set to give while you can!

Gifts that do good

[Disclaimer: I share the next two shops both as an affiliate and as a loyal customer. I’m happy to chat about any or all of them at any time and wouldn’t recommend anything that I didn’t absolutely love myself.]

I’ve been making a special effort this season to support small businesses and make sure that my purchases are ethically-sourced, thoughtfully made, and when possible, environmentally friendly. I was over-the-moon excited when I discovered Redemption Market, a company that carefully curates handmade items and donates a portion of the proceeds to the artisans/causes that make those items. You can get a beautiful notebook that helps build schools, soy candles, gorgeous handmade bags, or even a pair of handmade earrings that help a woman escape trafficking and come with a note letting you know which woman you helped!

My Rothy’s take me everywhere!

And tomorrow, in honor of Giving Tuesday, Rothy’s (possibly my all-time favorite brand of shoes) will donate $25 to a school of your choice with any purchase of a shoe from their Giving Tuesday collection. What’s amazing about Rothy’s is that they’re not only super comfortable and environmentally friendly (they’re BPA-free and made from recycled water bottles), but they’re also WASHABLE. Seriously.

What a game changer. Even as the temperatures dip lower, I keep working out ways to continue wearing my Rothy’s since I always feel put together in them, they’re better for my body than heels (especially with my disability), and I don’t have to worry about the weather or terrain ruining them. No scuffs, no smelly shoes, and all dirt is easy to remove. Use my link for $20 off your first purchase!

And while I’m sharing brands that are helping saving the environment, I’d be cheating you if I didn’t tell you about Girlfriend Collective. The company started just over a two years ago and has been a huge hit since. Their OG “Compressive” leggings help suck you in and move with your body without ever showing your underwear, and their bras are super comfortable. They even have a new line of shirts made from recycled cotton, and a line of leggings made from recycled fish nets! (Those are a bit more see through but great for hot yoga or something where you don’t want to trap as much heat in your clothes. I have them in plum but tend to gravitate to the original leggings, which I wear almost every day.) They’re celebrating Cyber Week with a deal a day between now and Wednesday.

Whatever way you choose to celebrate, remember to keep the true spirit at the heart of it all. How can you do good? How can you make life and the world a little bit better?
